If you like your fear served hot, Orlando delivers.

Universal Orlando

It's usually quite hot in Central Florida come end of October, but there are plenty of chills in the still of the night. Halloween night, that is.

All Hallows' Eve in Orlando is a pretty big deal. Orlando is home to one of the greatest annual scare fests in the U.S. – Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights™ (HHN).

HHN is recognized as the nation's most popular and industry-awarded haunted theme park event, and for good reason. It's bloody awesome. I go almost every year and always fall prey to the predators that carouse and control the dark, cobbled streets. I love nothing more than being terrified in foggy back alleys where shady characters lurk and wicked shadows loom.

This fall, September 15 – November 4, the streets of Universal Studios Florida™ come alive with all-new hordes of horrifying mutants, monsters and maniacs. Explore nine terrifying haunted houses, brave five creature-filled scare zones, enjoy two outrageous live shows, and experience many of the park's most exciting rides and attractions.

I won't lie, the lines to the houses are long but they are worth it. Insider tip: Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday are generally slower nights. But you can always purchase HHN Express Passes to enjoy more of everything. Spend money to save time. I've also found that lines are relatively short for the regular rides during HHN because everyone is busy doing other things, like being assailed by diabolical zombies. One year, I unabashedly rode shooter-ride Men in Black over and over again until the park closed. In fact, I had the highest score of the night!

This 5-star celebration is for thrill seekers 13 years and up because its themes are violent, tasteless and somewhat irreverent. The scare zones and houses are to die for and the overall atmosphere is a memorable mélange of thrills, chills and a lot of laughs. Just beware of anyone named Klutzy, Krazy or Kreepy toting a chainsaw...

Walt Disney World

The antithesis of HHN would be Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom Park Walt Disney World® Resort, August 25th – November 1st. For kids of all ages, this lighthearted celebration claims to be the happiest haunting on Earth. Your little guys and ghouls can collect candies, sweets and frightfully delightful treats (including allergy-free options), while the park hosts grinning ghosts, eerie entertainment and Disney Characters that go bump in the night. It’s an ocean of Halloween fun for the whole family at SeaWorld Orlando’s Halloween Spooktacular®. Most theme park Halloween celebrations are daily, after-dark, separately ticketed events, but not this one. SeaWorld's Halloween Spooktacular runs weekends, September 23 – October 29 and is included in park admission. During this daytime event, families enjoy trick-or-treating, whimsical pumpkin fish, sea-themed arts and crafts and up-close animal encounters. Your nautical little goblins can follow the special Halloween Spooktacular pathways to multiple candy stations throughout the event, each featuring treats galore.

It's a whale of a good time. Click here for details Halloween Spooktacular

Not looking to beat crowds but still want your fill of fear?

A Petrified Forest

This haunted scare trail (2017 marks its 10th year of fear) may be relatively small-scale, but apparently it packs a punch (don't worry, not that kind). In fact, if you attend on their Total Eclipse night, you have to sign a waiver beforehand. Heck yeah...that's my kind of Halloween celebration! This event has a PG-13 rating and is geared towards folks 13 and up. I've never been, but plan to go this year, as this event gets really good reviews. So, if you also find the idea of encountering murderous maniacs and marauding monsters deep in the dark and haunted woods appealing, well then maybe I'll see you there. There are no tricks to this fright-night treat...the fear is all straightforward. For the terrifying details, click here A Petrified Forest
